The effects of anthropogenic particulate emissions from ships on the radiative, microphysical, and chemical properties of m(oderately polluted marine stratiform clouds are examined. A case study of two ships in the same air mass is presented where one of the vessels caused a discernible ship track while the other did not. In situ measurements of cloud droplet size distributions, liquid water content, and cloud radiative properties, as well as aerosol size distributions (outside cloud, interstitial, and cloud droplet residual particles) and aerosol chemistry, are presented. These are related to measurements of cloud radiative properties. The differences between the aerosol in the two ship plumes are discussed; these indicate that... |

The survey of sediment and hydrological parameters in the old harbor of Bizerte has revealed that this ecosystem knows a high anthropogenic pressure. In this area waters were characterized by weak contents in dissolved oxygen and sediments, rich in fine fraction, were loaded in hydrocarbons and in organic matter. The free-living nematodes, predominant taxa, responded to these disturbances by a significant decrease in their densities and their biomasses and had tendency, notably at the most isolated sites, to penetrate deeply to escape surface sediments highly loaded in hydrocarbons and in organic matter. |

Chemical additives are used extensively in the offshore oil industry. For secondary oil recovery, the biopolymer xanthan has been recommended as a viscosifying agent but its use may provoke microbial problems. The effect of adding xanthan to marine sediments on the growth and metabolic activity of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was studied. In all instances, its addition resulted in an increasing in SRB numbers of up to 250-fold. This was accompanied by a marked increase in the electron transport activity of the sediments when these were incubated under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. The products formed as a result of the biodegradation of the polymer by indigenous heterotrophic bacteria in these sediments appear to have acted as suitable... |

In order to estimate the effects of chlorine used in cooling systems of electric power plants on zooplankton, some experiments have been realized with the four first larval stages of the prawn (P. serratus Pennant). Chlorine injection was performed by constant adding at 16 and 20 degree C with times exposures of 5, 15 and 25 minutes. If there is no detectable variations in sensitivity of different stages, toxic effects of oxydants issued from chlorination can be observed (for both the two acclimatation temperatures) at 15 minutes exposure with a LD 50 : 32 mg/l of chlorine. |

Experiments in oyster-breeding areas where oyster Crassostrea gigas suffers from anomalies of calcification, show an obvious correlation between the importance of the malformation of shells and the vicinity of port areas where a great number of boats usually stay. Organotin compounds contained in antifouling paints, and more precisely Tributyltin fluoride (TBTF) induce, in experimental environment, similar anomalies to those observed in natural environment. The amounts of total tin in the tissues of oysters living in the vicinity of spots where organotin products are brought in, can reach high values, though they appear to decrease rapidly whereas the environmental contamination lessens. The authors suggest that results of organotin upon the mechanisms of... |

The influence of spillage of phosphates on the bacterial population and its activity was found to be not significant (on total number) or significant but low (on the number of growing cells which was higher close to the loading area). Phosphate discharge resulted also in a significant increase of dividing cells and of enzymatic activity but its effects could be hardly separated from sewage effects. Neither solubilizing strains nor bacterial solubilization could be detected. |

Many maritime countries in Europe have implemented marine environmental monitoring programmes which include the measurement of chemical contaminants and related biological effects. How best to integrate data obtained in these two types of monitoring into meaningful assessments has been the subject of recent efforts by the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Expert Groups. Work within these groups has concentrated on defining a core set of chemical and biological endpoints that can be used across maritime areas, defining confounding factors, supporting parameters and protocols for measurement. The framework comprised markers for concentrations of, exposure to and effects from, contaminants. Most importantly, assessment criteria for... |
